Installing the Magtouch Electronics uploader on Ubuntu

Applies to: the Magtouch Electronics desktop program. Tested on Ubuntu 11.10 with Wine 1.3; newer versions may differ.

1. Install Wine from the software centre if it is not already installed.
2. Download the installer and open it; it runs in Wine. Follow the prompts. When it offers to install the USB drivers, leave that unticked: Linux already has them.

3. Make sure the USB cable is not plugged in. Open a terminal and run:

   ls /dev | grep USB
   

   Note anything it shows. It may show nothing. 4. Plug the USB cable in and run the same command again. A new line appears, for example ttyUSB0. 5. Link that device to COM1 for Wine, replacing ttyUSB0 with what you saw:

   cd ~/.wine/dosdevices
   ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 com1
   

4. Give your user access to serial ports, replacing fred with the name whoami prints:

   whoami
   sudo adduser fred dialout
   

Log out and in again, then start the program from the icon on your desktop.
